A Professional Handler
A professional handler is a person qualified to show another's dog and for a fee by virtue of their experience and ability. A professional follows a code of ethics, and is knowledgeable and experienced at showing dogs. A handler devotes a huge amount of time to the care, conditioning and exhibition of show dogs. He also loves dogs of any breed and has an affinity with the dogs he handles. The professional handler is eqipped to maintain the safety of the dogs under his care in his vehicles, kennels and on the show grounds. A professional will:
1. Honestly evaluate your dog's potential as a show dog.
2. Show you how to condition, train and groom your dog to make it competitive in the conformation ring.
3. Present your dog to it's best advantage.
4. Will show your dog where it can best win.
5. Usually get a championship on the dog in less time and expense than the owner-handler.
The professional handler's vehicle will be equipped with the equipment necessary for the safety of your dog at a show and traveling. He will have crates, exercise pens, grooming, feeding and watering equipment to provide care in all types of weather while at a show - whether indoors or out.
Professional handlers are a valuable source of knowledge in the sport of purebred dogs. It is important to note whether you feel comfortable leaving your dog in their care. A dog's emotional as well as physical well-being is extremely important to it's ability to show well for the handler. A dog that is not exercised, given attention, or feels comfortable with the handler will not show well.
Whether you board your dog with the handler, or just bring it ringside, a certain synergy is necessary for a winning combination. Your dog as well as you must be comfortable with the handler and know the dog is in safe and caring hands.
